The Watch canvas
Apple’s Watch icon design canvas is 1088 × 1088 pixels. You deliver the square. The system masks it to a circle, the same way iPhone masks its icon to a rounded square. Corners of the square will not be seen, so type and detail pressed against the edge are wasted.
The store icon set exports that Watch canvas from the same mark as the 1024 iPhone icon. On the Store icons page the preview is shown in the circle, so you can judge the crop before you download the square file.
